Badlapur, a city known for its deep cultural and spiritual heritage, is home to the historic Mahaganpati Temple, which is believed to be around 300 to 350 years old. This ancient temple has been a significant center of devotion and traditions, with a unique connection to the Peshwas.
A Glimpse into the Temple’s History
The Mahaganpati Temple, located in the heart of Badlapur Gaon (West Badlapur), is one of the oldest temples in the region. The town itself holds historical importance, as legends suggest that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to halt here to change his horses during his campaigns. This legend gives Badlapur its name, derived from the Marathi word “Badalne” (to change), symbolizing the exchange of horses.
A Divine Connection
The temple is renowned for its powerful deity, Mahaganpati, who is worshipped as the giver of wisdom and intellect. It is widely believed that couples who face difficulties in conceiving visit this temple, pray for a child, and often find their wishes fulfilled. The idol of Mahaganpati, according to local lore, was brought to Badlapur in a palanquin from Bhimashankar, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
The Temple’s Link with the Peshwas
The Peshwas, who were great patrons of temples and religious institutions, had a strong association with this temple. Historical records indicate that the Peshwa rulers granted 7 acres of land to the Mahaganpati Temple for religious and cultural activities. Additionally, they donated two hoons (gold coins) for the temple’s oil lamps and facilitated various spiritual events.
To ensure the temple’s upkeep, a priest named Raghunath Lavate from Chari village near Alibaug was appointed by the Peshwas. His 10th generation descendants still reside in Badlapur today, preserving the temple’s legacy.
Architectural Marvel and Evolution
Originally, the temple was constructed using wooden architecture, resembling the traditional Konkan-style houses. It had a tiled roof, a Deepmala (lamp tower), and a large entrance. Over time, renovations were carried out, but the two-and-a-half-foot-tall Ganpati idol remains unchanged, continuing to be the centerpiece of devotion.

Over the centuries, the Mahaganpati Temple has played a crucial role in shaping the spiritual and cultural fabric of Badlapur. The temple attracts thousands of devotees, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi and Angarika Sankashti Chaturthi, making it a vibrant hub of devotion and festivities.
